Editorial Policy

Freelancer Tax HQ publishes tax and money guides for US freelancers and the self-employed. Because a wrong number can cost readers real money, we follow the standards below for every article.

Who writes our content

All articles are written by the Freelancer Tax HQ editorial team, drawing on the team’s professional experience with self-employment income, small business finances and tax rules. Articles are published under the team byline because every guide goes through the same research, writing and review process.

Our sources

We rank sources in this order and use the highest one available for every figure:

  • Primary law and official guidance: the Internal Revenue Code, IRS publications, form instructions, revenue procedures, notices and IRS newsroom releases.
  • Other government agencies: the Social Security Administration, HealthCare.gov and CMS, the Department of Labor, the Small Business Administration, FinCEN and state tax and business agencies.
  • Reputable secondary sources: established financial and legal publishers, used to cross-check figures or for information governments do not publish, such as product pricing.

Every article ends with a Sources section linking to the pages we relied on. We do not publish statistics, quotes or reviews we cannot trace to a source.

Accuracy and examples

  • Dollar limits, rates and deadlines are checked against the official source for the tax year the article covers.
  • Worked examples use realistic, clearly labeled illustration figures, and the arithmetic is double-checked before publishing.
  • When sources disagree or a rule is not yet settled, we say so in the article.

Reviews and updates

Each article displays a Last reviewed date. We review our guides:

  • every tax season, when the IRS publishes new inflation adjustments and forms;
  • whenever a law, regulation or IRS guidance changes a rule we cover;
  • whenever a reader reports a possible error.

Corrections

If you believe something in an article is wrong or out of date, please contact us. We review every report, correct confirmed errors promptly and update the article’s review date.

Independence

Advertising and affiliate relationships never influence what we write, which products we mention or how we compare them. Product comparisons are based on publicly available features and prices, and we tell readers to confirm current terms with the provider. We never claim to have tested a product we have not used. See our Affiliate Disclosure.
