Quick answer
DoorDash doesn’t withhold taxes. Dashers are independent contractors who pay income tax plus 15.3% self-employment tax on their net profit, not on their gross pay.
- DoorDash sends a 1099-NEC through Stripe Express if you earned $2,000 or more in 2026 ($600 for 2025).
- Your biggest deduction is mileage: 72.5 cents per mile January to June 2026, 76 cents July to December.
- Tips are taxable, but qualified tips may be deductible from income tax (up to $25,000) from 2025 to 2028. Food delivery drivers are on the IRS list.
- Most Dashers owe roughly 14% to 20% of net profit in federal tax. Set aside a bit more for state tax.
How much Dashers owe
Two federal taxes apply to your net profit.
| Tax | Rate | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Self-employment tax | 15.3% | 92.35% of net profit (from $400 of profit) |
| Federal income tax | 10%, 12%, 22% and up | Taxable income after deductions |
Net profit is your DoorDash earnings (pay plus tips) minus business expenses. Income tax is reduced by the standard deduction ($16,100 single in 2026), half of your SE tax and usually the 20% QBI deduction.
That’s why many part-time Dashers owe only SE tax. Their profit after mileage is below the standard deduction. See Self-Employment Tax Explained.
Your DoorDash tax form
DoorDash issues the 1099-NEC through Stripe Express by late January. Log in to Stripe Express with the phone number or email you use for the Dasher app to download it.
- The form shows your total earnings, including tips.
- It does not show your miles or expenses. Those are yours to track.
- If you earned under $2,000, you may get no form. You must still report the income. See Didn’t Receive a 1099.
- Wrong amount? See Wrong Amount on 1099.
For 2026, the 1099-NEC has a new box for cash tips and a box for the Treasury Tipped Occupation Code. These help you claim the tips deduction.
What Dashers can deduct
Mileage (or actual car costs)
Most Dashers use the standard mileage rate because it’s simple and usually larger.
| Driving period | Rate |
|---|---|
| Jan 1 to Jun 30, 2026 | 72.5 cents per mile |
| Jul 1 to Dec 31, 2026 | 76 cents per mile |
Count miles driven to the restaurant, to the customer, and between orders while dashing. DoorDash only tracks some of your active miles, so use your own log or a tracking app. See Car Expenses: Mileage vs Actual.
The alternative is actual expenses: gas, repairs, insurance, registration and depreciation, times your business-use percentage. It can win for expensive cars with low mileage. If you want mileage in later years, use it in the first year the car is used for business.
Other deductions
| Expense | Deductible share |
|---|---|
| Phone and data plan | Business-use % |
| Insulated bags, phone mount, chargers | 100% |
| Parking and tolls while dashing | 100% (on top of mileage) |
| Car loan interest | Business-use % |
| Tax prep for your Schedule C | 100% |
| Health insurance premiums | Deductible on Schedule 1 if you qualify |
You can’t deduct parking tickets, meals you eat while dashing or regular clothes. See Self-Employed Tax Deductions for more.
The tips deduction
The final IRS list of tipped occupations includes Food Delivery Drivers (code 803). Qualified tips are voluntary tips from customers, including tips paid in the app. You can deduct up to $25,000 per return, phasing out above $150,000 of modified AGI ($300,000 joint).
Two limits for Dashers:
- The deduction can’t exceed your net profit from dashing.
- It reduces income tax only. You still pay 15.3% SE tax on tips.
You claim it on Schedule 1-A. You don’t need to itemize.
Worked example
Jay dashes full time in 2026. He is single with no other income.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| DoorDash earnings (including $13,000 of tips) | $52,000 |
| 12,000 miles Jan to Jun × $0.725 | $8,700 |
| 13,000 miles Jul to Dec × $0.76 | $9,880 |
| Phone (business share) | $600 |
| Bags and supplies | $200 |
| Parking | $300 |
| Total expenses | $19,680 |
| Net profit | $32,320 |
| Tax | Without tips deduction | With $13,000 tips deduction |
|---|---|---|
| Self-employment tax | $4,567 | $4,567 |
| Federal income tax (approx.) | $1,115 | $75 |
| Total federal | $5,682 | $4,642 |
The tips deduction saves Jay about $1,040 of income tax. His SE tax doesn’t change. The figures are simplified and include the standard deduction and QBI deduction. Try your numbers in the Self-Employment Tax Calculator.
Paying and filing
- During the year: pay quarterly estimated taxes once you expect to owe $1,000 or more. Remaining 2026 dates: September 15, 2026 and January 15, 2027. See Quarterly Estimated Taxes.
- Save as you go: move 20% to 25% of every weekly payout into a tax account. See How Much Should I Set Aside for Taxes as a 1099 Contractor?.
- At filing: Schedule C for income and expenses, Schedule SE for SE tax, and Schedule 1-A for tips. See How to Fill Out Schedule C.
If you have a W-2 job too, raising W-4 withholding can replace quarterly payments. Missed payments may cost an Underpayment Penalty.
Frequently asked questions
Does DoorDash take out taxes?
No. DoorDash pays you the full amount. You pay income tax and SE tax yourself through estimated payments or at filing.
Do I pay taxes on DoorDash if I made under $2,000?
Yes. All income is taxable. You owe SE tax once your total self-employment profit is $400 or more.
Can I deduct gas as a Dasher?
Only if you use the actual expense method. The mileage rate already includes gas, so you can’t deduct both.
Is DoorDash Pay (base pay) eligible for the tips deduction?
No. Only voluntary customer tips qualify. Base pay, promotions and peak pay are regular business income.
