Side Hustle Taxes: What You Owe If You Earn Extra Income

Quick answer

Yes, side hustle income is taxable, from the first dollar, whether you get a 1099 or not. If your side business makes $400 or more of net profit in a year, you also owe 15.3% self-employment tax on top of income tax.

Because your day job already uses up the lower tax brackets, side income is taxed at your top rate. A good rule is to set aside 25-30% of your side profit (more in high-tax states or at higher salaries).

The thresholds that matter in 2026

ThresholdWhat it means
$0All income is taxable, even without a form
$400 of net profitYou must report it and pay self-employment tax
$1,000 of tax owed for the yearThe IRS expects estimated payments or more withholding to avoid penalties
$2,000 from one clientThe client must send you a Form 1099-NEC (new threshold from 2026; it was $600)
$20,000 and 200 transactionsPayment apps and marketplaces must send you a Form 1099-K

The higher 1099 thresholds mean many side hustlers won’t receive any tax form. That doesn’t change what you owe; it just means you need to track income yourself.

Hobby or business?

The IRS treats your side activity as a business if you run it to make a profit: you work at it regularly, keep records, try to grow it and could reasonably make money. If it’s a hobby, you still report the income, but you generally can’t deduct the expenses and don’t pay self-employment tax. Most side hustles (freelancing, driving, reselling for profit, content creation) count as businesses.

How much tax you’ll owe: a 2026 example

Alex earns a $60,000 W-2 salary and makes $10,000 of profit from freelance design on the side. Single filer, standard deduction, no state tax:

Salary onlySalary + $10,000 side profitExtra tax from the side hustle
Social Security and Medicare on salary$4,590$4,590$0
Self-employment tax on side profit$0$1,413$1,413
Federal income tax$5,020$6,006$986
Total federal tax$9,610$12,009$2,399 (24% of the side profit)

The QBI deduction ($1,859 here) and deducting half of the self-employment tax keep the extra bill lower than you might expect. Add your state’s income tax on top.

Two ways to pay it (and avoid penalties)

Option 1: Increase withholding at your day job (easiest). Give your employer a new Form W-4 and enter an extra amount to withhold per paycheck in Step 4(c). In Alex’s case, about $92 extra per biweekly paycheck ($2,399 ÷ 26) covers the side hustle. Withholding counts as paid evenly through the year, so it can fix underpayment even if you start late in the year.

Option 2: Pay quarterly estimated taxes. Use Form 1040-ES and pay by April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15. This suits side hustles with irregular or growing income. See Quarterly Estimated Taxes.

Either way, you’ll avoid penalties if your withholding and payments cover at least 90% of this year’s tax or 100% of last year’s (110% if your prior-year AGI was over $150,000).

Deductions that lower your side hustle taxes

You’re taxed on profit, not revenue, so every legitimate business expense saves you money. Common ones for side hustlers:

  • Mileage for business driving: 72.5 cents a mile for January-June 2026 and 76 cents from July 1, 2026 (not your commute to your day job).
  • A share of your phone and internet used for the business.
  • Equipment and software: laptop, camera, design tools, apps.
  • Home office, if you have a space used regularly and exclusively for the side business.
  • Platform and payment fees (Etsy, Upwork, PayPal, Stripe).
  • Supplies, inventory and shipping for sellers.

How to report side hustle income

  1. Schedule C (Profit or Loss From Business): your side income minus expenses.
  2. Schedule SE: self-employment tax, if profit is $400 or more.
  3. Form 1040: the profit flows into your normal return along with your W-2.

Keep a simple spreadsheet or app with every payment received and every expense, plus receipts.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay taxes on a side hustle if I made less than $600?

Yes. There’s no minimum for income tax: all income is reportable. $600 was the old threshold for clients to send a 1099, and it’s $2,000 from 2026. Self-employment tax starts at $400 of profit.

Do I need to pay taxes if I didn’t get a 1099?

Yes. You report all income, with or without a form.

How much should I save from my side hustle for taxes?

About 25-30% of your side profit is a safe default. See How Much to Set Aside for Taxes.

Does selling my old stuff count as a side hustle?

Selling personal items for less than you paid isn’t taxable profit. Buying items to resell for more is a business. See Taxes on Reselling.

Will my side hustle affect my tax refund?

Often, yes: without extra withholding or estimated payments, your refund shrinks or turns into a bill. Adjusting your W-4 is the simplest fix.
